What caring for your dog’s ears can tell you about your pet’s health

Checking your dog’s ears regularly can tell you a lot about his health. In fact, dog ear care is an important component of your companion’s health.

Keep in mind that if you check your dog’s ears every other day, you may see some early signs of trouble. Use both sight and smell to detect any symptoms. Actually, your sense of smell can be more effective at times.

This technique could definitely help you notice any signs of problems or infections.

Dog ears don’t normally smell bad. A stinky ear is a sign of trouble.

One possibility for problem ears in dogs is ear mites. These can be detected if you see that there is a dark colored waxy discharge.

Another symptom of illness is pus-like discharge, which means there may be a bacterial infection.

Yet another reason why a dog’s ear smells bad is allergy related. There may also be a secondary candidiasis. If you don’t find and end up with the source of the yeast/allergies, this will require ongoing treatment with mixed results.

According to some vets, ear problems in both ears can even indicate liver or kidney problems.

What breeds of dogs can get ear infections more easily?

Having floppy ears is one reason some dogs get frequent ear problems, as less air passes through the ear canals. This is why spaniels and bloodhounds can be quite susceptible to this.

Coarse hair growth inside the ear can also cause a problem, much like that of a Lhasa Apso. Dogs that like to swim can also expose their ear to ear infections.

In case coarse hair growth is the cause of the ear problem, you can trim the hair on the inside of the ears.

How do you clean your dog’s ears?

A simple vinegar and water solution is best and provides antibacterial properties. Just mix 1 part plain vinegar with 2 parts water. Use a clean cloth or cotton balls. Wet the cloth with the vinegar and water solution and clean the inside of your pet’s ears.

Dog ear care is very important for your pet’s health.
