Are you ready for some youth soccer? Just remember it’s not about you!

Well, it’s that time of year… You guessed it’s out of control, why doesn’t my son play anymore, let’s fire the coach, then let’s lynch him, time of year. This is his football season. To make sure your child has a great season, here are some ideas I thought might help.

Get Little Johnny’s ass off the couch before the season starts. Take him outside, I know he’s hot, but he’ll survive. Play something with him, he’ll enjoy it more than sitting on the couch watching SpongeBob. It’s very important that his son get some form of conditioning and training before the season starts. You and I both know that the first day of practice the coach won’t be happy until some kid vomits. Make sure it’s not your son.

While Johnny watches that episode of SpongeBob where he thinks the star Patrick stole his jellyfish net, Johnny has probably watched it at least 6 times. He encourages him to stretch while he watches TV. I got used to doing this while playing and I make my kids do it. I did it so much that I still find my old butt lying on the ground clutching my toes. I have to remind myself your old man now let it go, you couldn’t pull your hamstring if you tried.

I know it’s easier to have a happy meal, but don’t, not even the milk one, no, I’m serious, keep driving, I don’t care if they have apple slices now. Imagine that your son goes to the Olympics as a world class sprinter, would you encourage him to eat fast food and make vegetables in front of the television? For the good of our countries, I hope not. Eating right will give your child more energy on the field, prevent injury, and make him or her the fastest, most incredible athlete. Ok last bits are bullshit but I’ll say anything so you don’t stop at mc D. You know how slow that super big number 3 makes you feel well imagine if you ate that then you and I went out and made some hitting drills. after! I mean I’m going to hurt you either way, but at least this way you won’t throw up.

This last step is really about you, the parent. It’s not about you! Try to remember that it’s not about how your child or the team did. The truth of the matter is that it’s hard for all of us to love children. We see how talented and cool they are every day. We want others to know how special our child is. But at whose expense? The fact is that different children develop and mature at different times. The best and fastest guy today is usually not tomorrow. If scouting and recruiting were an exact science, why did Brett Farve go to Southern Miss., and Jerry Rice to Mississippi Valley State, and Marshall Faulk only got one scholarship offer to play running back and that was at San Diego State? ? Let your child have fun. FUN FUN FUN!! Because guess what if he’s not having fun, he’s not even going to want to, and how well do you do the things you don’t want to do? I had to clean the toilet today and take out the trash, both half done! I took out the garbage about 4 hours after my wife asked me to and almost missed the garbage can.

In my house 2 rules, give 110% and have fun. If I don’t see those things, you don’t play. Soccer is not a game to be played by halves, serious injuries occur when children are not serious about what they are doing.

So enjoy the season, and best of luck. Remember that the Ohio State coaching staff will not be there to recruit. So take it easy with the kids, don’t worry so much about mistakes as much about effort and a big smile on their face. That’s what we all want for our kids anyway!
