The benefits of running to stay fit and healthy

Running is one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay fit and healthy. As children, we were natural runners, as we needed an outlet to burn off all that excess energy that children have.

When we grow up, we tend to lose the habit of running, unless someone is chasing us. Many of us spend most of our time sitting at a desk looking at a computer screen. Instead of burning energy, those excess calories are turned into fat, which we store around our stomachs, hips, and thighs.

If it’s been a while since you last ran, it’s wise to take it easy at first. It’s not a good idea to rush into a mini marathon, as this will do more harm than good. Take it slowly and gradually. If your body is not used to running, the best way to build your stamina is to start walking every day. Start with 15 minutes a day and gradually increase your pace until you are walking briskly for 30 minutes a day. If you can keep this up for 4 weeks, your body will be better able to take on the extra effort needed to run.

I’m not a fan of long distance running. In my opinion, you can do more damage to your body and health in the long run. That constant pounding on your knees and joints plus the long-term strain on your cardiovascular system can actually weaken your body. Recent research has shown that a more effective and safer way to build your strength and endurance is to do short bouts of moderately intense aerobic exercise like running or walking for 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. Even light activities around the house, such as running up and down the stairs, gardening, or brisk walking with the dog, can have enormous positive effects on your health and well-being.

So why should I start running, I hear him ask. Well, running has many benefits and below are some of them:

  • Lose weight by burning those excess calories.
  • Reduce your chances of getting heart disease.
  • More energy and agility.
  • Strengthens the muscles of the lower body.
  • Escape the confines of the house for the sun and fresh air.
  • It’s free, no gym membership required.

Invest in a good pair of running shoes, get out there and start running like a kid again.
