What is an Oilskin duster? Well, it’s a kind of fashion similar to a trench coat but with a western style, they are usually made of a heavy black or brown canvas material, with a water repellent coating called ‘Reproofing Cream’ on the outer shell, most of these have an additional flap that hangs from the neck and shoulders, fastens with a clasp under the neck, and a strap under each arm. This lapel sometimes extends to the middle of the back. The purpose is multifunctional in heavy rain, slows down the progress of seeping water and can also be used as an additional windbreaker when wrapped around the head.
The Oilskin Duster has 4 exterior pockets; two are flap and 2 slit behind flap pockets and it is also styled with a split tail at the back, this split is also held together by snaps. When the split is separated each side can be wrapped around the leg and while riding a horse or motorcycle, the original oilskin dusters also have 2 additional straps at the knees that can be used to hold the tail when there is windy. leg or throat boot straps, Oilskin Dusters aren’t exactly maintenance free and require proper care, but I’ve had mine for about 12 years and it still serves me well. When out in the fields, the Duster is excellent at resisting snags from brambles and gochya plants.
While many states now allow concealed carry, a standard western platform can be worn under the Oilskin Duster with plenty of room and few restrictions.
The Oilskin Duster is easy to care for, my preferred way to clean mine is through the hood of my truck, but you can just as easily use a backyard table or large flat rock, a large fairly flat surface is all it takes , mild soap and water (do not use a degreaser) and a medium soft scrub brush. After cleaning the Oilskin Duster hang it up to dry, once it has dried well you will need a can of ‘Reproofing Cream’ and a good sponge or towel as a gift. For best results in waterproofing your Duster should be warm, apply directly from the can evenly to the coat shell paying close attention to all seams. For best results, warm up the repair cream and use a second clean cloth to remove excess cream.
WARNING: Waterproofing cream can damage some materials, permanently changing the color of the fabric.
