Grooming Your German Shepherd for Health and Good Appearance

Taking care of your German Shepherd’s coat is not only because it will look better, but also because it will feel better. The German Shepherd’s coat is short and shiny. It really isn’t hard to care for. The coat is made of two layers, an inner layer and an outer layer. Sometimes they will shed a little, other times a lot. That’s why it’s so important to get ready. The coat of a German Shepherd is quite dense.

Try to “quick” brush your dog at least twice a week. If he doesn’t, he will start to shed and his undercoat will get matted. This is very uncomfortable for your dog. Your dog will really learn to enjoy brushing with you.

When shedding more hair than usual, use a dog grooming “rake” or “blade”…this is a special tool, not a real blade! Don’t apply too much pressure when using these tools, it will hurt the dog. A shedding rake will also help by massaging your dog’s skin and loosening its natural oils as well.

Check the hair on their paws. You can keep them cropped for a better look. And, it feels better for the dog.

Try not to bathe your dog more than twice a year. His skin will dry out if you bathe him too much. You may want to treat your dog to some “dog spa” products after bathing.

German Shepherds really don’t require a lot of maintenance. If you force yourself to brush him regularly and check him regularly, you will have a great looking dog.
