Four things to do when moving to a new home

Most people, when moving into a new home, will line up all the necessary utilities to make their new home life more livable. Whether it’s hiring a Northern Kentucky pest control company, a Cincinnati pest control company, Duke Energy, Time Warner Cable, or the local newspaper, there’s a lot to think about before you move into a new home. There are other tasks that need to be addressed that will also make life easier and safer, if they are done before your move-in date. The top four jobs that need to be completed before you move in are flooring projects, deep cleaning, maintenance of home systems, and checks of all security devices.

Major projects like carpet replacement and hardwood floor refinishing are messy and require all furniture to be removed. Completing this type of work while the house is empty is not only easier to do, but can also save the homeowner time and money. Many companies charge additional dollars for labor to remove or rearrange furniture before starting a job. They also require additional time to complete the project. When restoring or replacing hardwood floors, there is a period of time when no one can be present in the home due to the chemicals used on the floors. Again, by completing these types of projects while the home is empty, homeowners can save themselves the headache and financial burden of finding another residence and/or storage for their furniture while the project is underway.

While flooring projects may not affect all new homeowners, deep cleaning is something everyone who buys a home should do before moving into it. Kitchen cabinets, closets, baseboards, and garages will never be empty again once the new owners move in. It’s the only chance to scrub dirt and mildew off surfaces and make them feel like new. Every space in the new home will feel fresh, clean and in perfect condition. All signs of previous owners will be removed. Owners will have a fresh start with great organization and cleanliness to match.

Behind-the-scenes home maintenance is equally important to check, clean, and replace, if necessary, before moving into a home. The air ducts, once cleaned and checked, will provide clean air for a family to breathe. It will also reduce the amount of dust and dirt that will accumulate on the furniture, in the carpets and in the lungs of the new owners. Air filters in HVAC systems also need to be replaced. Not only will this improve the quality of the hot and cold air you put out, it will also help extend the life of the system. The long-term benefits of this for the owner are both financial and quality of life. Also, if a home has a septic system, it should be drained and checked. This will let the new owner know that this system is working properly and that there will be no unexpected catastrophes in their new basement.

Lastly, a new homeowner should replace all smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries before moving into their new home. This will allow them to rest easy at night, knowing that their family is safe and that all protection devices are working properly.
