Camping on the beach: what are the pros and cons?

Can you imagine it, spending the night on the beach? It has to be one of the most romantic things you could participate in. sleeping under the stars, listening to the waves lapping against the embers of a low burning fire. But it can also have its negative aspects.

If you camp on a beach you must make sure you have permission to do so. In the UK there are some beaches in Scotland and Wales that will allow you to do this, and they are private beaches where you can also camp during the high season.

Camping is about getting back to nature and what better way to experience this than on a beach in the height of summer. You can only pitch a tent on soft sand though, you will really have a hard time trying to pitch a tent on a pebbly beach. You also have to be very careful in which part of the beach you launch. You must do it at a safe distance from the coast; you need to find out where the high tide mark is. You can often find out from the beach guard.

When you decide you’re going to go all out to camp on the beach, you should check the weather forecast. It’s really not worth trying when it rains. You’ll probably get wet anyway, even if it doesn’t rain because of dew.

A big part of beach camping is a campfire. You need to make sure you have permission, as campfires in Britain are generally prohibited. Some beaches may allow it, as long as you exercise due caution. In North America and Australia, lighting the fire is generally acceptable. It used to be in Britain but due to health and safety it is considered unsafe.

A big problem that municipalities have with people who camp on the beach is garbage. That’s right, one of the reasons why many local authorities do not allow camping on the beaches is because people litter. If you have garbage, you must dispose of it properly on the beach or wait until you get home to throw it away. The same thing happens when you go to the bathroom. The general public will not take kindly to you like the happy camper on the beach urinating in the sea. I suggest you take a camping toilet with you and then take it home and get rid of any inconvenience that way.

Although it can be difficult these days to camp on the beach, it really is a magical experience and well worth doing.
