Jaisalmer: a golden city of Havelis

Introduction
Camel safaris are just another reason to visit Jaisalmer, but the attraction is still the royal mansions, havelis, of the royal families of Jaisalmer. A matter of first legacy and heritage, the havelis are a main attraction in Jaisalmer most frequented by visitors. The three havelis of the 19th century are remarkable and impressive places.

Architecture
The mansions were a residence as well as being a status symbol for merchants. The prodigal is the haveli, the richest merchant. The architecture of these havelis is exclusive and unique. The entrance doors are carved and the stone sculptures are magnificent. For example, the Haveli of Nathmal was formatted by two Muslim brothers: Hathi and Lalu. Stone elephants are carved on the doors of two of the havelis vis -a-vis Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmal Haveli. You can also see the carvings of trains and bicycles, contraptions from the old modern era. The interiors of the imposing havelis are adorned with beautiful miniatures.

Attractions
Three main havelis in Jaisalmer are of special interest.

Patwon ki Haveli: This mansion is the most elaborate affair of magnificence. Situated between narrow streets, the mansion is classified into six apartments, of which two are made by the Archaeological Survey of India. The mansion was built by five Jain brothers between 1800 and 1860 who flourished with the trading of fine brocade and jewelry.

Salim Singh ki Haveli: The 300-year-old private haveli that is quite intricately shaped is named after its first owner, the Jain diwan Salim singh. From narrow floors it expands to a myriad of carvings. You will love seeing the beautiful vaulted ceilings with carved peacock supports. The strangest thing about the structure is that it is built without the use of mortar or cement.

Nathmal ki Haveli:This 19th century haveli was once the home of a prime minister. It prides itself on its impressive exteriors that range from carving to paintings. Two brothers Hathi and Lalu designed and contributed to the layout plan for the haveli.

Nearby places
Jaisalmer Fort: The imposing fort was started by Rawal Jaisal in the 12th century. The rulers of Bhatti had continued to strengthen the fort and consequently the fort has been one of the living forts in the history of India. Access the fort via a ramp that winds through four colossal gates. See the Dussera Chowk, Raj Mahal in the fort.

Gadi Sagar Lake: The tank was once a water reservoir and supplied water to the city. Surrounded by temples and shrines, the lake is a must see in Jaisalmer.
