Is the Galaxy Pad the new iPad?

Just when we thought laptops and notebooks had made us leave our desktop PCs behind, here come tablets. With the recent success of Apple’s iPad, computer and technology manufacturers have also given in to this madness by developing their own. One of them would be the electronics company Samsung, which recently released one of its newest touchscreen devices, aptly named the Samsung Galaxy Pad.

Although they weren’t the revolutionaries in the world of tablet technology, Samsung has definitely used this to their competitive advantage. Samsung executives and developers were keen to take note of the spiel and complaints from Apple iPad users. The iPad claimed to be the best platform for browsing the web; the Galaxy Pad took this to a higher level by being compatible with Adobe Flash Player. Apple customers complain that the iPad has no camera? Then the Galaxy Pad should be your best option! It includes not just one, but two cameras: a 5-megapixel on the front and a 3.2-megapixel on the back with an image resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels. Do you think the iPad is not too portable and too heavy to carry with you? The Galaxy Pad is your answer. Wrapped in solid plastic, it weighs less than a pound and has smaller dimensions than the first tablet Apple released. It’s no bigger than a standard paperback book, making it ideal for reading your favorite e-books wherever you are. The Galaxy Pad has access to more than 2,500 magazines, 2 million books and more than a thousand newspapers.

What really sets the Samsung Galaxy Pad apart from its rival would be the development of a unique type of technology called augmented reality, or AR. Armed with map applications, all a user has to do is hold the tablet and it will point out interesting bits about the location through graphics and web effects. If you are looking for a particular restaurant, hotel, or touring a new city, the Galaxy Pad can act as your virtual tour guide. Running on Google Android and Microsoft ActiveSync, this could be an ideal device for students and young professionals around the world.

Mobile phone operators have also become popular. Major US wireless providers such as Sprint Nextel, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile USA have also committed to including the Galaxy Pad in their service offerings. With its ability to operate on these major mobile networks, despite not having the classic dial pad and relying on touch screen technology, consumers can enjoy communicating with family and friends through third-party software. Carriers are also more likely to launch it at a much more affordable price, especially for customers bound by their service contracts.

It is not yet clear whether the Galaxy Pad will outsell the phenomenon caused by Apple’s iPad, but Samsung executives are optimistic. They claim that this will be a new “paradigm shift,” but we have yet to see the results. Samsung has been recognized around the world for developing some of the best hardware designs on the market, and consumers are excited to see more innovation from both tablet makers.
